Why Perene Innovation was born
Some of the best ideas never make it beyond the project that created them. Research consortiums bring universities, businesses and researchers together to develop genuinely innovative approaches to sustainability, circular economy and resource use and then the project ends, the report is filed, and the idea often goes no further.
Perene Innovation exists to close that gap. Founded on experience across sustainability, circular economy, life cycle assessment and collaborative research projects, combined with an economics perspective on business value, we help translate research and innovation into something companies can actually use connecting research, business realities and the right collaborators to move ideas from concept to commercial impact.
We don't just ask whether an idea is sustainable. We ask whether it can work in the real world.
One of the clearest lessons from this research experience is that sustainability, on its own, isn't always enough to drive change particularly for SMEs, who rarely have the margin to adopt something purely because it's the right thing to do. That doesn't mean businesses don't care about sustainability. It means sustainability becomes far more powerful when it is connected to business value.
A circular or resource-efficient approach is much easier to adopt when it also reduces material costs, cuts waste, saves energy, improves productivity, opens a new market, strengthens resilience to resource price volatility, or simply makes a better product. Sustainability shouldn't always be framed as a cost to be absorbed. Often, it's an opportunity to improve how a business actually works.

In practice, this means working with companies asking questions like: We know we need to become more sustainable :where do we start? We're generating waste, is there value we're missing? Could our waste stream become someone else's resource? We have a research finding or a piece of technology, how do we turn it into a business opportunity? Could we collaborate with researchers or other businesses to take this further?
